Keruve GPS Locator To Keep Watch on Alzheimer's Patients

There's plenty of people-tracking GPS devices out there to choose from, but if you're in need of something a bit more specialized, you may want to consider this latest device from Keruve, which is apparently intended specifically for Alzheimer's patients. To that end, the system employs a GPS tracker bracelet that's water-proof and can only be removed with a special tool -- it can also apparently fall back on cell tower triangulation (otherwise known as A-GPS) provide a location when regular GPS is unavailable. As you can see above, that gets paired with a handheld unit that pinpoints the patient's location on a map, but the entire kit doesn't exactly come cheap,

That’s right, it’s here!!! Steve Jobs officially unveiled the iPhone today at the CES 2007. It comes equipped with Max OS X which essentially allow you to use the iPhone as a true all-purpose gadget that allows you to make calls, listen to music, and surf the net.

The Apple iPhone will be available to the US in June, 2007, Europe in 4th Quarter, 2007, and Asia in 2008. Cingular will be exclusively offering the iPhone for $499 on a 2-year contract, and $599 for the 8GB model.

Novel approaches to improving gas mileage will enable engines to get the fuel efficiency of a hybrid but at a fraction of the cost

There is one small side benefit to gasoline selling above $4 a gallon and oil prices setting new records almost daily. From lonely inventors to small research firms to big carmakers, everyone is scrambling to find new ways to improve fuel economy. They’re not just working on the hybrid-electric vehicles and electric cars that make big headlines. Engineers across the globe are also working on ways to improve the good old gasoline engines that power today’s cars.
Take MCE-5 Development. This researcher based in Lyon, France, is the latest company to try to make a gasoline engine that will give cars the efficiency of hybrid-electric vehicles and clean diesels for a fraction of the cost. MCE-5 says it can get a 35% fuel economy boost from its 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. In a test lab, the company has gotten 220 hp and about 45 mpg, and all for less than $1,000 a vehicle.

JetBook - Mobile Library or a Mobile Bandwagon?

ECTACO’s jetBook features a 5-inch monochrome screen. Like other E-readers, you can adjust the font face and text size for easier reading. The screen has almost a 180 degree viewing angle. Like the other E-readers on the market, the jetBook can also play AudioBooks and MP3 music and display photos. It weighs just more than 7 ounces. The jetBook website is void of details about the E-Reader. For example, it has a rechargeable battery but it does not give stats for how long the jetBook can be used per charge. Its competitors are very clear about how long their E-readers can function on one charge. Ebooks are downloaded into the jetBook from your computer via a USB cable. Also like the other E-readers, ECTACO’s reader is environmentally friendly since it reduces trees being used for paper.

Finally a True Portable Multimedia Center

Portable multimedia devices are almost as popular with companies as the flood of eco-friendly gadgets. Most “multimedia” gadgets over promise and under deliver. Philips latest gadget - the DCP951 Portable DVD Player - reverses that trend. It has a 9″ TFT LCD screen. Philips designed this media player to be different from its competition. Unlike the laptop media player that fills the market today, the DCP951 resembles a tablet. It can easily sit on a table, counter or an entertainment center. This media player even includes a retractable docking station for your iPod. You can play music through your iPod while the DCP951 recharges it.

UIC Surgeons Perform Illinois’ First Totally Robotic Lobectomy for lung Cancer

Patients diagnosed with lung cancer may benefit from a minimally invasive totally robotic procedure that requires only a few small incisions instead of a large open chest incision to remove a cancerous growth in the lung.

Surgeons at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago are performing robotic-assisted lung resection surgery using the Intuitive da Vinci Surgical System for patients who would otherwise need traditional thoracotomy through a standard large incision in the chest wall and the separation or cutting of ribs to access the lungs.

"This is a new era in the treatment of lung cancer," said Dr. Pier Cristoforo Giulianotti, Lloyd M. Nyhus Professor of Surgery and Chief of the division of minimally invasive, general and robotic surgery at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, who has performed the first robotic lung resection for cancer in 2002. Professor Giulianotti has since performed more than 30 robotic lung resections while in Italy

Who's Got the Coolest Robot?

What's the coolest robotic technology that you have heard about? Inquiring minds want to know....
After viewing news about the killer robot soon to be unveiled (it's sort of a secret), and the rescue robot in Japan, I have to scratch my head and wonder, are we living in science fiction yet? Check out this bad boy:

Robot just like having a doctor in the house

A new robotics laboratory was opened in Auckland yesterday as a joint venture of Auckland University and Korean scientists.
Research, Science and Technology Minister Pete Hodgson had his blood pressure taken by a robot and said it was "an exciting new era".

WII SWORD+SHIELD

Need to find more ways to make your Wii feel more realistic? Or more like when you were a little kid and had a battle with wooden (ok, so mine were plastic i think) swords? This new foam collection by Hong Kong based Brando were too hilarious. Sword, Shield and Knife? or is it a machete? or a curved bladed thing to swing around? So here’s a little set to help make those endless hours of Zelda more enjoyable… and red steel… and any other game you manage to use them with! via Red Ferret.

BAMBOO ROUND 2

I am sad to admit i was a bit too excited and premature on posting the minimal info that Engadget led me to on the Wacom Bamboo. (I should have known better when i saw the awesome box graphics!) Apparently Wacom has pulled out all the stops on an insane international web campaign for this one…. well, international minus the americas so far. Here are some screenshots of the various sites… europe/africa and china’s being most impressive. The flashy line drawn graphics (and overly peppy music) on black are a nice touch. They even have desktop wallpapers… with screensavers and buddy icons coming soon. Screenshots below. Fascinating to see how they alter the branding for each market.

CANNO TX1

Introducing my latest tech impulse buy - welcome the Canon TX1 to my pile of purse gadgets. Still in NY for Design Week, but to be honest i’ve been completely spent mentally and physically… so today has been incessant posting and enjoying the hotel room, with a minor excursion - where on the way back i stopped by the legendary B&H which happens to be across the street. I’ve never been! And i was amazed and horrified with the crammed amount of technology and lines… it was like disneyland, with a line for EVERYTHING (to check in my bag, to talk to the digicam guys, then to pay, then to pick up the products, then to pick up my bag…) it felt like a super dense overly efficient fry’s like technowonderland. And i’ve been quietly stalking and hoping to find a Canon TX1, which were supposed to be out this month, but no one has them! Even amazon is saying 1-3 weeks before shipping. So imagine my surprise when the guy behind the counter tells me he hasn’t seen them yet, but will check. And they have 3! The clerk next to him says he just checked this morning and there are none… but NOW there are three. So i couldn’t resist. (and yes, even the most serious of the B&H clerks were ready to drool over this incredible little piece of tech)
I don’t think you understand till you play with this hybrid digital camera/video TX1… its about the size of the tiny elph cameras. It is 7.1 mgp for stills with 10x OPTICAL ZOOM… and it shoots HD video. and its new physical UI is a pleasure to use, and the automatic lens cap is brilliant. And rotating lcd (so no more purse scratches for me). Not to mention image stabilization, and up to ISO 1600. Now - if only i had managed to get this a few days ago, my purse would have been much lighter (been shooting with the Digital Rebel) - and there might have been some videos… well, there’s still part of tomorrow left

just announced… basically a streamlined laptop ideal for wifi usage on the go, or sucking internet and email over from your treo. It’s got my gadget sense tingling… i think i need one. Even though i did switch from treo to blackberry pearl and the iphone is coming out soon. GAH. Can we say technology identity crisis, so many to crave, so little time to adopt them all properly? Anyhow, the images of the Foleo (ugh, on the spelling) are definitely drool worthy, especially if the black rippled coating is that slightly rubbery feeling finish.for more pics

Nike Air Max 90 x 360 Tech Pack

When the Nike Tech Pack originally debuted, it was the fusion of technology and classic and casual stylings. In some ways the hybrid Air Max 90 x 360 which released prior to the Tech Pack exemplified this relationship best. It introduced the latest and greatest in cushioning and seamless Nike Air Max technology with the old school aesthetics people have come to love from the Air Max 90. This latest Nike Air Max 90 x 360 Tech Pack follows some similar design themes as some of the previous footwear releases such as the Air Max 90, Rhyolite and Okwahn. Available now at UNDFTD

Online or Offline Editing

Do your offline editing and then move to online editing using the same tool! DeckLink supports uncompressed online quality and on Mac OS X™, DeckLink also supports ProRes, DV and JPEG compression for offline work.A faster alternative to offline is using DeckLink for uncompressed 10 bit capture and playback. You can do all of your work in uncompressed and when your job is finished you won't need to do online at all. That’s great when deadlines are tight as you can work right up to the deadline before outputting to tape. Eliminating the offline process can really save time and lowers costs.

Phone watches banned from Thai exams

I had my good share of ways to cheat on exams when needed to, but it didn’t include any kind of “top-notch” technology, like it happened in Thailand. According to someone on the Ministry of Education, a student was caught cheating during an exam by using his phone watch - can you blame him?
The cheating system while using this kind of gadgets is pretty simple: take a discrete photo of the exam questions, send it via MMS to a friend that has the knowledge or knows how to look for the answers, and wait for a SMS with all the goodies.
The only problem is being discrete, and in this case, the student was caught while receiving/reading the text messages that were displayed on the watch. Thanks to this student, all normal watches are banned from exams, and the next step is to take a look at wall clocks.

Toyota iReal Is A Wheelchair On Steroids

Is it an armchair? Is it a Hover-round? What the hell is it? It's Toyota's new mobility concept, the i-Real. The seat moves from an upright position to a lying down one depending on your speed. The thing tops out at about 18 mph, which is the max legal speed for 50cc type vehicles in Japan. If these thing makes production and come to the US, you better believe it'll need to go at least 30 mph. I'd be taking this thing to the liquor store and back all the time. In style. So what if I've already amassed a collection of DUIs on bicycles, golf carts, and ride-on mowers. I'll get one on this thing too. 'Cause I real. Real stupid. And real horrible at driving.

Oct 11 2007 Honda's Puyo Is Soft, Does 360s In Place

Not to be outdone by Nissan and their cute little Pivo 2 Honda showed off the Puyo (which I thought was Spanish for a woman's genitals) concept van/box thing in Tokyo this week. It has a gel-like outer shell instead of sheet metal that's supposed to be a lot more resilient and safe in collisions. The wheels are from a go-cart (okay, maybe not) and are pushed all the way out to the corners, so the car can do 360s in place. To jack up its coolness factor from 0 to 1, it has scissor-wing doors. Nice try Honda, but I wouldn't be caught dead in it. I would be caught having sex with a prostitute in it though. Because that's how I roll.
One more of the doors open after the jump.

New tech scores at World Cup

World Cup 2006, the biggest sporting event on Earth, kicked off in Germany on June 9 and runs through the final on July 9. Soccer, aka football worldwide, is one of the simplest sports--you need only a ball and field to play--but this year's tournament will see some technology creeping onto and around the field and new opportunities for fans to follow the action.
Each match will be played with a new Adidas "Teamgeist" ball with a 14-panel configuration that forms a perfectly smooth exterior. The new ball construction promises to give players increased accuracy and control. But goaltenders have complained that "Teamgeist" veers randomly giving the strikers an added edge.
On Amazon.com, the 2006 FIFA World Cup Teamgeist Match Ball carries a list price of $128.70. More on the balls later. Next Image »

Airports vending GBA, PSP portables

I took a 9:30 a.m. EST flight out of Atlanta this morning, en route to Los Angeles, and on the way to gate A17 I happened upon the latest in vending machine technology: the Zoom Shop. LG and Alltel rock to the Rhythm

Music phones and smartphones are two of the biggest categories of handsets today. Music fans can get one device that lets them make and receive phone calls while listening to music. Without a phone that can play music, users end up needing to carry a MP3 player and a mobile phone. Finding a place to stuff an extra gadget can be a big problem for some users.

The LG Rhythm is an interesting phone that features a built-in FM transmitter that can send music playing on the phone to a FM radio up to ten feet away. That means in your car you can listen to music from the phone on your car audio system without resorting to accessories. The handset has an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack and can change between music and phone calls automatically.
